| At The Night of the Heavyweights- Why Doesn’t Chris Byrd Get More Love? by Java Bomani Giving up 50, 60 or so lbs, the smaller big man, listened to the referee’s count, trying to clear his head. He’d just taken a shot from the giant that would’ve sent many down for good. The man mountain across the ring, who just a moment ago sent the smaller man down to the canvas, is now set to move in for the kill. Blood in his eyes, the leathery feel of the rawhide IBF championship belt tantalized his tongue. He could almost hear the clasp the belt being fastening around his waist. He looks intently into the eyes of the smaller man, set to make it all come true when the referee turns him loose. What happens next – isn’t what most people thought. Chris Byrd gave him a whuppin. Byrd stood in harms way, with huge, bad intending shots coming at him, but he didn’t cower or run away all night and hope the judges remember he’s the champion and give him the decision. He used angles, speed and movement to frustrate his opponent. He left his chin to be hit, and when the opponent reared back and threw the knockout blow at the exposed chin -- he slipped it – time after time. The next thing you know, his man is dead tired. Byrd doesn’t have much power, but his technique is usually superb. On this night it was. More proof that superior technique can overcome a size or power deficit. |
