Many people have differing views when it comes to Martial Arts training, and there’s nothing wrong with that. My own personal outlook will be forever highlighted with an emphasis on realism. I need much of what I do in my training to convert to everyday life on the streets. Maybe I feel that way because I was raised on the mean streets of Newark, New Jersey, where at that time (it’s much better now) any second you could find yourself fighting to keep what you have, whether it be life, money or pride. I’ve been in a few scrums, one time I was on the short side of a 12 on 4 and another time I came real close to fighting 12 (not my favorite number) guys by myself, so I always apply my martial training, and way, toward how effective a technique is against multiple attackers bent on harm. Now… with that in mind, I find stick fighting, an essential weapon to train with, if one actually plans to use what they learn, if something life threatening was to ever breakout. The way I see it; what’s the use of being the world Nunchaku champion if you don’t have any when you walk down the street? And you’re not likely to find some lying around when you need them. The same goes for Sai, Tonfa, a spear or a lot of other tradition weapons. I’m not saying I wouldn’t train with them, because it’s all about learning things and expanding your knowledge. To master anything is more about mastering yourself than anything else. The martial arts came about, as a way to stay in shape, both mentally and physically. What I like about stick fighting is, it’s real. Many of the techniques that apply to the stick can translate to empty hands, and also to things you can find lying around if you need help. A tree branch will work, along with a mop handle, a car’s windshield wiper, ‘THE CLUB’ (a steering wheel anti theft device) works real well and it comes with an authentic reason to have one in the car. These things can be used to express what you’ve been doing with your time, if you ever have to.
