| The Martial Mind by Java Bomani What is the Martial Mind? The Martial Mind is many things… while being nothing. It is a lifestyle, a way of thinking, a formula, a-mazing; it is all of this and more, also none of them and less. It is the next level; the zone ball players sometimes find themselves in. It is spiritual. I charted Gordon Lu making such a reference in my book RETURN TO WU, while he was talking to the differences between Kung Fu and the other martial arts. The words of Gordon Liu a.k.a. The Master Killer. “Kung Fu is the art of culture in China. It's a knowledge. I want to let this spirit and knowledge, the art of culture, let all the foreign people know that. (When performing a move) it's with spirit. My arm, my sight and spirit. Let all the foreign people know that. (It's not just going through the motions.) Have tempo and spirit. When it's slowly, also like Tai Chi, with spirit. Let all the people know. Kung Fu is not something like Tae Kwon Do, Boxing. That's not Kung Fu, It's a knowledge.” What he is simply saying here is, don’t forget the reason, meaning and spirituality behind the technique; and then take it to the next level. That’s what Kung Fu has done over the centuries. The Martial Mind never arrives anywhere; it is forever on a journey. Some learn to throw a few punches, a few hard swift kicks, or they obtain a black belt and then think they are there. Where? The Martial Mind doesn’t fall prey to this trap; it always wants to know what’s next. Power couldn’t be, without weakness. Neither could strong; they would just be un-named emotion without their opposite action. The only way one truly appreciates love, is through knowledge of what it’s like to be without it. Humility is essential for a martial artist or person attempting to access the realm of greatness. We all obtain some skill on our journey; cocky show offs end up suckin steak through straws when they meet a more skilled opponent possessing the humility the Martial Mindset gives one. He feels no need to walk around like he’s half cold bloodied killer, half wild ass pissed off gorilla, he merely basks in the knowledge of knowing who he or she is. Talkin it, ain’t enough. Walkin it, ain’t enough. Both walking it and talking it won’t suffice. Doing it, understanding how and why is a good place to start. www.1ancientwon.com Java Bomani |
